With great relief (and near exhaustion) I have passed the baton of Buchholz Nursery ownership to the MrMaple company of North Carolina. The new proprietors, brothers Tim and Matt Nichols, vow to maintain the quality and integrity of my 43-year-old wholesale nursery/arboretum, and to increase its relevance with the addition of new species and cultivars, a dream-come-true for me.

The famous “Nichols Boys,” as they are known in the international world of horticulture, have no intention to put me out to pasture, but rather encourage me to stay on and assist in the transition, and I find that prospect to be very exciting. I liken my new role to that of a grandfather, an old man who loves to hold and play with his grandchild, but when the kid grows fussy at bedtime or poops his diaper, I'll hand him back to his parents. I did a lot for Buchholz Nursery but I wasn't able to do all that I wanted.
Those who are familiar with the Nichols brothers know that they are joined at the hip, and their whirlwind is best described by the three e's: energetic, enthusiastic and entelligent. I am very optimistic that they will improve my old, archaic company, and the new blood will benefit all of you loyal customers. I'm confident that the best of Buchholz Nursery is yet to come, and I'll do my part to ensure that we'll continue to be the “most fun wholesale nursery in the world.”

Fantastic news! Congratulations to all! The maple lovers of the world owe Talon a huge debt of gratitude and to now know the legacy will be in the most capable hands possible is greatly gratifying news!

ReplyDeleteI am so happy for you Talon and for the continuation of Buchholz Nursery. I too am ending my maple career after 38 years with the sale of my remaining inventory to Dan at Celestial Maples. Thank you for your mentorship and for the amazing maples I was able to purchase from you over the last 30 years. Without you I would never have made it so long. You have done more for the world of maples than anyone else I know and all of us maple-lovers are forever grateful for your expertise and the number of new cultivars you have introduced. Tim and Matt Nichols are the best and will continue your legacy. I wish you much happiness in your future with Haruko and your daughters.
